Experience Cadillac Ranch: The Heart of Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas
Traveling through Texas offers numerous opportunities to encounter unique and historic landmarks, but few are as iconic and visually striking as Cadillac Ranch. Situated along the legendary Route 66 in Amarillo, Cadillac Ranch is more than just a roadside attraction; it's a vibrant piece of Americana and a living canvas for artists and travelers alike. Here’s everything you need to know about Cadillac Ranch, the history of Route 66, and the surrounding area.
The History of Cadillac Ranch
Cadillac Ranch was created in 1974 by a group of artists known as the Ant Farm, led by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez, and Doug Michels. Funded by eccentric millionaire Stanley Marsh 3, the installation consists of ten Cadillac cars buried nose-first in the ground at an angle corresponding to the Great Pyramid of Giza. The cars, ranging from 1949 to 1963 models, are positioned to represent the evolution of the Cadillac tailfin. Originally located in a wheat field, Cadillac Ranch was moved in 1997 to its current location along Interstate 40 to avoid urban sprawl. Over the years, the installation has evolved, with visitors encouraged to bring spray paint and leave their mark on the cars, making it a constantly changing piece of public art.

Route 66, often referred to as the "Main Street of America" or the "Mother Road," was established in 1926. Stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles, the highway played a crucial role in American history, serving as a major route for migrants heading west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The road became a symbol of freedom and the open road was immortalized in literature, music, and film. In Amarillo, Route 66 remains a vibrant part of the city’s culture. The Historic Route 66 District in Amarillo features a variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions that pay homage to the road’s storied past. Our Personal Connection
On our journey to Colorado, we saw the sign for Cadillac Ranch and had to pull over and check out this incredible and iconic roadside attraction. It was absolutely worth it! We parked on the side of a very colorful road, covered in spray paint from countless visitors. The Cadillacs are located in the middle of a field with a large walking area that, despite being dirt, is covered in colorful spray paint. Walking up to the first Cadillac was a surreal experience. All the cars are covered in multi-colored spray paint, with different sayings and painted pictures, making it a true piece of working art. People are encouraged to leave their mark on the cars, and that’s exactly what we did. We found a can of orange paint on the ground and tagged one of the Cadillacs. It was amazing to be a part of something so iconic in American culture. We even ran into a family from France who came specifically to visit the ranch. If you’re in Amarillo or just passing through, Cadillac Ranch is a must-stop!
